Error 1706 during SharePoint 2010 installation

Don't know how this happened. When trying to remove a WFE server from one farm, and then join it to another farm, error 1706 popped up during the configuration wizard.

Initially, the errors are:

Product: Microsoft SharePoint Portal English Language Pack -- Error 1706. An installation package for the product Microsoft SharePoint Portal English Language Pack cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'spsmui.msi'.

Product: Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 1033 Lang Pack -- Error 1706. An installation package for the product Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 1033 Lang Pack cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'wssmui.msi'.

Product: Microsoft SharePoint Portal English Language Pack -- Error 1706. An installation package for the product Microsoft SharePoint Portal English Language Pack cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'spsmui.msi'.

Some article says this is caused by the change of the path of the installation media.  Unfortunately, I don't think this is the reason in my case.   From the error message, the only thing I know is the configuration wizard could not find the path of "Language Pack".  So, instead of trouble shooting, I installed those packages manually.  There are totally around 10 msi files in "Language Pack" setup media. Then, the errors below showed up:

Product: Microsoft Office Server Proof (Russian) 2010 -- Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files.  Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive.    For other potential solutions to this problem, see SETUP.CHM.

Product: Microsoft Office Server Proof (English) 2010 -- Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files.  Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive.    For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:\Users\_SPFAR~1\AppData\Local\Temp\2\Setup00001660\SETUP.CHM.

This still looks like caused by "Language Pack", so I tried to re-install it. Here is the problem: I could not uninstall it. When I tried to uninstall it through "Programs and Features", no error message, but  "Language Pack" stuck to the program list and didn't want to leave. And the worse thing is, I also could not uninstall SharePoint server.

After hours of struggling, I felt desperate, and was ready to re-install the whole virtual machine. As the last resort, I removed the entry from registry table "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Office14.OSMui.en-us", then try to install "Language Pack" again. BING!  It worked!!

The re-installation of "Language Pack" fixed all issues.

(My environment is SharePoint 2010 SP1 + CU 2011 Aug)

  4. I tried repairing SharePoint 2010 itself and got the same errors about the language pack media not being found.

Removing the registry key and reinstalling the language pack did however not allow me to repair SharePoint yet.
Uninstalling the language pack and retrying to repair SharePoint did not work either, giving me the same error that the language pack cannot be found, now I understand it, because IT'S NOT THERE.

It has now been removed both in registry and programs and features. Trying to install the language pack again did not work...

    1. SabbeRubbish, You may need to delete the relevant files from "Program Files" folder before reinstall it.

  5. hi Eric. desperately looking for a solution..Sharepoint server 2010 ( trial version) failing. ( env win server 2008 R2 + sql server 2008 R2 SP1)

Please look at my posts here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointadminprevious/thread/2b587df8-b1ee-4c8b-bffc-ff52749d0c79

I do not see Office 14 at all in my files nor registry.
The screen shot when installation fails says:
“Microsoft sharepoint server encountered an error during set up”
In the log , last few lines talks of wssmui.msi faling
    SI(COMMONDATA): '1: 2 2: 0 '
    MSI(COMMONDATA): '1: 2 2: 1 '
    MSI(TERMINATE): ''
Successfully rolled back install of package: wssmui.en-us path:D:\Sharepointfiles\wss.en-us\wssmui.MSI
    Showing completion dialog.
Catalyst execution finished: 11/22/2012 09:29:45. Return code: 1624.
    PERF: TickCount=42948046 Name=RunSetup Description=End function

So I run that file wssmui.msi manually , the error is “Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 1033 Lang Pack cannot install one of its required components”

I think is it Error applying transforms..I see this too in the log file. Something to do with language pack. How the error talks of MS Sharepoint Foundation when I didn't install that at all? What installs Oserver or Office 14? Does SQL server install something related to Microsoft Office Webserver components ? I think there was SQL express in my machine already..which I uninstalled. And there is Visual studio 8 and 9.0.

Please suggest what next to try.

Can't get the right lead..If log can be better understood, that will help. Please suggest what to check.

    1. Hi Joythi,

This type of error is hard to trouble shoot, because there are too many possible reasons. It's definitely not enough to just check the sharepoint installation log file.

I recommend to rebuild the whole virtual machine, start from scratch. That may take half day, which is nothing compare to the time you have spent on the trouble shooting.

    2. Thanks Eric for your response..

I installed MS office Professional 2010 and then installed Sharepoint server 2010. It worked. :)
Also completed MS project server 2010 installation.

Because the log talked about Microsoft Office Server Proof (English) 2010, went about installing MS Office 2010 ( I took MS office Professional Plus 2010).
Do note, I never saw this mentioned as a pre-requisite anywhere for SQL server or Sharepoint server !

I hope the solution is a useful info for whoever finds similar error. :)

      See below log:

  6. Hi Eric,
I tried run configuration wizard SharePoint 2010 itself and got the same errors about the language pack media not being found.

Remove the registry key of language pack and uninstall the SharePoint 2010 and retrying to install SharePoint , giving me the same below error
Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\1\Setup00001560\SETUP.CHM.
Now I understand it, because IT'S NOT THERE.

It has now been removed both in registry and programs and features. Trying to install the language pack again but it prompts me below message.
“Setup is unable to proceed due to the following error(s):
This product requires a prior installation of a Microsoft Office 2010 server product. Install a Microsoft Office 2010 server product first, and then run Setup again.
Correct the issue(s) listed above and re-run setup.”

Please share your experience as I am wasting my time from 2days 
Looking forward to hear from your earliest convenience.
    Thanks,
    Ashutosh

    1. Hi Ashutosh,

You have spent three days on it. I would recommend to leave the farm first, then format the hard disk system partition, and then re-install everything, and then re-join the farm.

This solution may take 4 hours (install all patches may take a while), but can save a lot of time.

Not worth for further trouble shooting.
